Is ceramic coating worth it in Florida?

For most Orlando drivers, yes. Not because it makes your car look good for a week, but because Central Florida attacks your paint every single day of the year, and a coating takes those hits instead of your clear coat.

That said, it isn't the right call for everyone. Here's how to tell.

What Florida does to your paint

Sun, all year. Most of the country gets a break in winter. Florida doesn't. UV exposure slowly breaks down clear coat, which is what causes that chalky, faded look on older cars, especially on roofs and hoods. A ceramic coating has UV resistance built in and slows that process down.

Lovebugs. Twice a year, roughly late spring and late summer, lovebugs cover every windshield and bumper on I-4. Their bodies are acidic, and when they bake onto paint in the heat they can etch into the clear coat permanently. On a coated car, they sit on top of the coating and wipe off with a normal wash.

Afternoon storms and sprinklers. Rain and sprinkler water leave minerals behind when they dry. Left long enough in the sun, those spots can etch. A coated surface is slick, so water beads and runs off before most spots can set. Coated cars can still get water spots, but they come off much more easily.

Bird droppings. Also acidic, and on a hot day they can etch clear coat within hours. A coating buys you time to wipe them off.

Pollen and sap. Oak pollen season turns every car yellow, and tree sap bonds hard to bare paint. Coated paint releases both with a regular wash.

Coating vs just waxing

Wax and sealant sit on top of your paint and wash away. Wax lasts a few weeks, a sealant a few months. In Florida heat, often less.

A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, glass like layer that lasts years. You stop waxing entirely.

When it's worth it

  1. You're keeping the car more than a couple of years. The longer you own it, the more value you get.
  2. Your car lives outside. Street parking, apartment lots and office lots mean full sun and full bird exposure. Coatings matter even more if you park outside, not less.
  3. You have a dark car. Black and dark colors show every swirl and water spot. A coating keeps them looking deep and makes washes much safer.
  4. You hate washing your car. Dirt doesn't stick as well, so washes take a fraction of the time.
  5. You care about resale. Paint that still looks new is one of the easiest ways to hold value.

When it might not be

  1. You're turning the car in soon. If you're trading it in within a year, a quality sealant may be enough. If you do want a coating on a lease, a 3 year coating fits.
  2. You still plan to use the brush car wash. Automatic brush washes put swirl marks right back into the paint and harsh soaps wear coatings down faster. A coating works best with a hand wash or coating safe maintenance washes.
  3. You want rock chip protection. A coating doesn't stop chips. That's paint protection film. See Ceramic coating vs PPF.

The part most people miss: correction first

A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. If it goes on over swirl marks, you've just sealed those swirls in for years. That's why every APES coating starts with decontamination and paint correction under proper lighting, then the coating is applied and cured indoors, panel by panel.

If you get a quote that's just "wash and coat," it isn't the same product.

What about new cars?

New cars still benefit. Dealer prep and transport often leave light swirls and contamination, and a new car is the easiest time to protect paint that's still in great shape. Most new cars need only a light polish before coating.

Bottom line

If you live in Orlando, keep your car for a while and park it outside, a professional ceramic coating is one of the best things you can do for the paint. Pick a coating level that matches how long you plan to keep the car, and make sure correction is part of the job.

Questions people ask

Is ceramic coating worth it in Florida?

For most drivers who keep their car more than a couple of years, yes. Florida's year round sun, lovebugs, bird droppings, hard water and pollen all damage clear coat, and a coating takes those hits instead.

Is ceramic coating worth it if you park outside?

Yes. Cars parked outside get the most sun, bird and pollen exposure, which is exactly what a coating protects against.

Does ceramic coating protect against lovebugs?

It helps a lot. Lovebugs are acidic and can etch bare paint in the heat. On a coated car they sit on top of the coating and come off with a normal wash. Wash them off as soon as you can either way.

Can I take a coated car through an automatic car wash?

It isn't recommended. Brush washes add swirl marks and harsh soaps wear the coating down faster. Hand washing or coating safe maintenance washes keep it performing.
