Ceramic coating vs PPF: which one does your car need?

Front end of a car prepped for paint protection film at APES

Ceramic coating and paint protection film (PPF) get compared like they're two versions of the same thing. They're not. They protect against different kinds of damage, and a lot of owners end up with both.

The one sentence version

Ceramic coating protects your paint from chemical and environmental damage and makes it glossy and easy to clean. PPF is a thick, clear film that physically absorbs impacts like rock chips.

What ceramic coating does

A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a hard, thin, glass like layer bonded to your clear coat.

It's great at:

  1. Resisting UV fade and oxidation
  2. Stopping bug acids, bird droppings and tree sap from etching in
  3. Making water bead and roll off, so the car stays cleaner and washes faster
  4. Deep gloss that lasts years instead of weeks

It won't:

  1. Stop rock chips
  2. Prevent deep scratches, key marks or door dings
  3. Fix existing swirls on its own (that's what paint correction before the coating is for)

What PPF does

Paint protection film is a clear urethane film, much thicker than any coating, applied to the panels that take the most hits.

It's great at:

  1. Absorbing rock chips and road debris on highways like I-4 and 417
  2. Protecting high impact areas: front bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors and rocker panels
  3. Many modern films can heal light surface scratches with heat

It won't:

  1. Make your car easier to clean on its own as much as a coating does (unless the film itself is coated)
  2. Cover every panel cheaply. Full car PPF is a big investment, so most people do the front end.

Which one do you need?

Get a ceramic coating if your car is mostly around town, you want it glossy and easy to wash, and your main enemies are sun, bugs, birds and water spots. That's most daily drivers in Orlando.

Add PPF if you do a lot of highway miles, drive a car where chips on the bumper and hood would really bother you, or own something high value where original paint matters.

Get both if you want the best of each. The usual setup is PPF on the front end, then ceramic coating over the whole car, including on top of the film. The film stops the chips, and the coating makes everything glossy and easy to clean.

Correction still comes first

Whether it's a coating or film, both lock in whatever is underneath. Swirls and scratches should be corrected before either goes on. Every APES coating starts with decontamination and paint correction for exactly this reason.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between ceramic coating and PPF?

Ceramic coating is a thin, hard layer that protects against UV, chemicals and etching and makes the car easier to clean. PPF is a thick clear film that absorbs physical impacts like rock chips.

Does ceramic coating prevent rock chips?

No. Only paint protection film protects against rock chips.

Can you put ceramic coating on top of PPF?

Yes. Coating over film is a common setup. The film absorbs impacts and the coating adds gloss and makes cleaning easier.

Which is better for a daily driver in Orlando?

For most daily drivers, a ceramic coating covers the biggest risks: sun, bugs, bird droppings and water spots. Add PPF to the front end if you drive a lot of highway miles or want chip protection.
